Toshiba: M700 perfection game

A few weeks ago I finally bought the M700 I was talking about in my older post.

Let’s perfect it:

I give it a 8 out of ten

What I like about it:

  • I like the form factor.
  • I like the size
  • I like the weight
  • I like the fingerprint reader
  • I like Vista
  • I like the possibility to turn on/off wifi by an physical switch
  • I like the possibility to turn of the sound with an physical turning wheel
  • I like the fact that turning on wirefull lan and turning of wireless lan does not break the connection of most online app’s.
  • I like reading on it
  • I like Toshiba Easy Guard
  • I like the 4gb memory
  • I like taking notes on it
  • I like that I can expand the paper when I need more space in between two things I wrote

To give it a 10:

  • The Fingerprint reader should recognize my fingers more.
  • The FingerPrint reader should be positioned at the top of the screen in Laptop mode
  • The laptop/vista should have an option to plug in the power and only start using it when at 10%
  • It would not have connections to the front of the laptop.
  • It would have an intern smartCard Reader next to the PCMCIA reader.
  • it should have a one button to turn of music
  • I don’t like the fact I have one reason less to work Topless

Top 10 reasons to say NO to BootCamp

The next European BootCamp has just been announced.

Paircoaching.net holds another Reboot to Team 2.0 at Koningsteen from 15 till 20 june 2008.

To avoid that we have to much people joining, I ‘m posting our top ten reason why people should NOT follow a BootCamp.

1. My projects effortlessly complete on schedule and in budget every time.
2. Every team I’ve ever been on has shared vision.
3. In meetings, we only ever do what will get results.
4. No one here blames “management”, or anyone else, if they don’t get what they want.
5. Everybody here shares their best ideas right away.
6. Ideas are immediately unanimously approved, improved, or rejected by the team.
7. Action on approved ideas begins immediately.
8. If we avoid conflict it goes away.
9. I do everything myself. I don’t need to work with others and I have no customers.
10.I prefer crisis, inefficiency, and unresolved conflict – it gives me something to talk about over dinner.
BootCamp. It just works.

Reboot to Team 2.0 starts today

I don’t pretend that people will learn soft-skills at one week Bootcamp. As I told a few managers this week: you will change. I just can not predict how you will change. I do know that people that come out of bootcamp are much more focused on achieving results.

I will check in the way I will do the next days a lot:

I’m checking in:

I’m SAD I will leave my wife and kids alone for one week.

I’m AFRAID about the results of Bootcamp.

I’m GLAD & MAD I worked so hard on this BootCamp.

I’m MAD I worked a lot of nights to get Bootcamp going.

I’m GLAD I got this bootcamp together, I’m GLAD that I asked for help from a lot of people, I’m GLAD I had FAITH. I’m GLAD people kept pushing me and asking me if Bootcamp was still on. I’m glad I will  go to Seattle  in a few weeks to Boot a French consulting company.

I’m GLAD Koningsteen is such a wonderful  place
I’m glad Paul & Vickie are our trainers again.

Reboot to Team2.0 @ Koningsteen

Today I’m preparing the Reboot to Team 2.0 (Bootcamp) of next week.

So  next week, while all of you are working hard in boring offices, I will be working even harder in a peaceful place called Koningsteen.

I think it is the best place to have such a training. A beautiful garden, nice big rooms, great food and even a sauna.

Don’t believe me , just relax for the next 10 minutes looking at this video. 10 minutes is long? I will be there 5 full days and five full  nights, ….
I hope the 9 students will love koningsteen as much as the previous ones did.

I just love my work …

Reboot to team 2.0 is the perfect follow up after a CSM (Certified Scrum master class)

Sven followed a great CSM with Joseph Pelrine. (I have followed already multiple courses with Joseph. including my own CSM. I agree he is great.)

Svens next step is learning about self-organizing teams.

I have a few tips for Sven and every other CSM.

1) Check out my post about self organizing teams.

2) As I told you in chat I think that Reboot to team2.0 the best course is to learn about self organizing teams.
    a) you are in a self-organizing team all week and you have to deliver something at the end of the week.
    b) you learn to use rules that will help you to create your own self-organizing team

You can download these rules (The Core protocols) for free from the McCarthy website.
You can use them like this. They will work.

I notice that most people need a bootcamp to find the courage to use the core protocols. They do feel strange. Yes I agree.

And yet the more I use them, the more I think about them,  the more logical I find the Core protocols.
Some of them I use at home with my kids.

If you are in a distributed team, or in a company that has a a culture of e-mail, you might also want to check out my “taking group decisions by email protocol post”.

Being angry is alright…

I’m just back from a GTO (Gestalt Therapy Training) weekend.
I don’t want to write too much detail on what happens there, as that is private to the group.

Although we don’t learn techniques in the GTO, on thing that happened gave me an idea.

The way we deal with being angry is, is based on a script we wrote ourselves when we where kids and how we were allowed (or not) to deal with that.

The Check in protocol can help with that. Saying that you are mad, glad, sad or afraid. Checking out when being mad is as powerful.

With my kids I learn them that being mad is OK.

It’s not OK to hit me, themselves or someone else when being mad. Neither is doing anything stupid (like destroying something…)

So when my 3 year and 5 year old kids get mad and hit me, or spit at me or something similar I ask them to checkout or I put them in time-out.

Today I saw a very powerful reaction of our trainer to a person being mad at her.

It’s ok to be mad at me.
I don’t promise I will change my behavior. But when I do this action again, you are allowed to be mad, and every time this happens I will give you the time to deal with it.

In this case the person was given a pillow she could hit on. And believe me it helped.

It made me realize I allow my kids to be mad but I don’t give them a tool to work out their frustration, their emotion and their energy.

It’s not yet clear to me how we will do this. It is clear I want to do something with that idea.

I loved the fact that the trainer said, “it’s ok to be mad at me. I will do the same thing. And it is OK to be mad at me for that.” I noticed that this surprised a few people. I don’t see many managers saying this. For me this is one of the qualities of a good leader. (Or parent).

It was also very clear that when you deal with this kind of situation badly as parent/manager, you can damage your kids/employees a lot.

The core protocols are a great way to deal with emotions at work.

Update: it works great with my kids. They understand that being angry is OK. They start to understand that it is nt Ok to work it out on other people. And they start taking a pillow to hit our seat.

The abundant universe

Jim & Michele said in one of their podcasts, look at the universe, ask for help and you will see the universe is abundant.
This week I had a nice chat with Jim about how to bring BootCamp to Belgium.

JOhan LybaertOn the xp.be evening event I listened to Johan Lybaert from Cegeka,/Ardatis who shared his experience scaling XP+Scrum to 90 people. I heard a lot of good idea’s for scaling up. Not only is Johan’s leading his company  into the future, he is

also a very good speaker. I am looking forward to heard Johan speak on the It-works event: Agile development in practice

After that I talked a little bit about my experience as agile project coach of a distributed team.
I was not happy with my own talk, but was very happy with the fact that Pascal made me think about

– what is the situation
– What went good?
– What would I do different?

In fact I send the same questions to the team as a kind of small retrospective. And I had a wonderful response back from one of my developers.
Abundance again.
I asked for feedback on the design of my logo and website the last few weeks. The answers really helped me to take a decision.
In the last weeks I have also mailed a few people if they wanted to coach a workshops/game @ PairCoaching. The conversations I had with them where all a signs of an abundant universe.

Today I had a great conversation with a blogger I have been reading for months but never met.
Although I felt connected with him/his ideas, I was amazed about the similarities in our way of speaking and thinking.
I knew we had not much time, but after we talked what seemed very long, I was surprised to see that only one hour went by. After speed reading, now also speed talking. Guess we created our own Speeddate.

When I came home, our neighbor came around with a bread she made, for us. Just like that.
Because we were out of bread, it felt like the “wood come” story that Jim’s talks about at BootCamp…

Abundance…
